Netflix is cutting jobs, Girls is returning, and three new trailers offer a look at next year’s viewing. Today’s Screen Wrap brings together nine developments across film and television, from Greta Gerwig’s Narnia to the reopening of a neighbourhood cinema.

The News That Matters
Netflix cuts roughly 1,000 jobs

- Company: Netflix
- Reported cuts: About 1,000 roles
- Workforce share: Roughly 6%
- Announcement: 14 October 2026
Netflix is cutting roughly 1,000 jobs, about 6% of its workforce. CNBC reports that the reductions largely affect product, technology, legal and human resources teams, citing a staff memo from co-chief executives Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters.
The executives said the company remained on course for its full-year forecast while making choices about where to put its people and resources. That makes this a significant restructuring rather than an announcement that Netflix is abandoning its growth plans. The immediate consequences, of course, fall on the employees whose roles are going. Netflix reports its next quarterly results on 20 October.
Girls returns for five episodes, with production starting in 2027

- Network: HBO
- Format: Five-episode revival
- Production: Starts in 2027
- Creator: Lena Dunham
HBO is bringing Girls back for a five-episode run. Lena Dunham returns as Hannah alongside Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells, with Judd Apatow again executive producing. Production starts in 2027; that is not a confirmed premiere date.
The announcement does not name Adam Driver among the returning cast. A short run leaves room for a focused reunion: the interesting question is how these friendships look after another decade of life, rather than whether everyone can recreate their younger selves.
Gerwig’s Narnia opens its doors in a first trailer

- Writer and director: Greta Gerwig
- Cinemas worldwide: 12 February 2027
- Netflix: 2 April 2027
- Based on: C.S. Lewis’s The Magician’s Nephew
The first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew has arrived, introducing the adventure of Digory and Polly before the familiar story of the wardrobe. David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell lead a cast that includes Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep.
The film is heading to cinemas worldwide on 12 February 2027, followed by Netflix on 2 April. Those separate dates matter for anyone deciding whether to make a cinema trip or wait to watch at home. You can watch Netflix’s official trailer below and judge the new take on Lewis’s world for yourself.
Sam and Ashley Levinson take their next television projects to Amazon

- Studio: Amazon MGM Studios
- Platform: Prime Video
- Agreement: Overall television deal
- Production company: Tiny Goat Productions
Euphoria creator Sam Levinson has signed an overall television agreement with Amazon, where he will exclusively develop and produce projects for Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. The deal also covers Ashley Levinson, his producing partner at Tiny Goat Productions.
The move follows Euphoria’s third and final season at HBO. It sets a new home for their future television work, but it is not itself the announcement of a particular new series. The next point of interest will be what they choose to make with that backing, and how far it moves beyond the territory of their HBO work.
The Bay Theater prepares to welcome Pacific Palisades back

- Location: Palisades Village, California
- Partners: Paramount Pictures and Caruso
- Operator: THE LOT
- Reopening: Planned for later in 2026
Paramount Pictures and Caruso have agreed to reopen the Bay Theater in Pacific Palisades, with THE LOT operating the venue. The cinema has been closed since the January 2025 wildfires. A reopening is planned for later this year, although the exact date has yet to be announced.
The programme will combine new theatrical releases with classics, special events and other screenings, alongside dining in the auditorium. For the neighbourhood, the return offers something a release calendar cannot measure: a familiar place to gather again. The practical detail still to watch for is when tickets and opening programmes become available.
Baywatch’s new trailer brings Hobie back to the beach

- US network: FOX
- Premiere window: January 2027
- Lead: Stephen Amell
- Showrunner: Matt Nix
FOX’s Baywatch revival has a new official trailer ahead of its January 2027 arrival. Stephen Amell plays an adult Hobie Buchannon, now leading the lifeguard team and facing an unexpected family complication when the daughter he never knew arrives. Jessica Belkin plays his daughter.
The trailer promises the rescues, beachside relationships and spectacle associated with the name. Matt Nix is the showrunner, with an ensemble including Shay Mitchell and Hassie Harrison. The January window is for FOX in the US; a UK release is not being announced here. Watch the full official trailer below.
The Land brings family conflict into the Cleveland Browns’ front office

- Creator: Dan Fogelman
- UK: Disney+, 15 February 2027
- US: Hulu, 15 February 2027
- Launch: Two episodes, then weekly on Mondays
Dan Fogelman’s The Land has unveiled its trailer and a 15 February launch on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the US. Two episodes arrive first, followed by weekly instalments on Mondays. Christopher Meloni, Mandy Moore, Chace Crawford and William H. Macy are among the ensemble.
The drama follows Cleveland Browns coach Danny Roarke as he faces one last opportunity to turn the team around, with his own son arriving as its newly drafted quarterback. Meanwhile, owner Hal Durkin must choose which daughter should succeed him. It is a setup built for conflict well beyond the playing field. Disney+ UK’s official trailer is below.
Hunting the Executioner moves into television development

- Source novel: Vicente Vallés
- Producer: Avatar Entertainment
- Planned format: Eight-part series
- Status: Development; no network or streamer attached
Avatar Entertainment has acquired the rights to Vicente Vallés’s Hunting the Executioner, known in Spanish as La Caza del Ejecutor. Borja Moreno and Pablo Riquelme Cuartero are attached to adapt it as an eight-part television thriller, with Avatar founder Larry Robinson executive producing.
The story pairs an American CIA agent with a Spanish intelligence operative on the trail of an assassin targeting Western spies. No network or streamer is attached at this stage. It is a development announcement with a premise and writing team in place, rather than a production or release-date commitment.
Ava DuVernay’s 14th leads the documentary nominations

- Event: Critics Choice Documentary Awards
- 14th: Six nominations
- You Can See Everything: Five nominations
- Ceremony: 8 November, New York
Ava DuVernay’s 14th leads this year’s Critics Choice Documentary Awards with six nominations. Alongside best documentary feature and director, the film is recognised for editing, music, political documentary and historical documentary. Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s You Can See Everything has five nominations, including feature and director.
Winners will be announced on 8 November at the Edison Ballroom in New York. Nominations offer a useful route into a crowded documentary field, but the breadth of these categories is also a reminder that nonfiction filmmaking has many different strengths: reporting, archival work, performance and the craft of shaping a story.
Movieversalfilm Takeaway
Today’s announcements show very different sides of the screen business. Netflix’s cuts have an immediate human cost, while the return of Girls and the new trailers look towards future audiences. The Bay Theater’s planned reopening is a welcome reminder of the local communities behind the larger industry. For viewers, Narnia and The Land now have clear dates to put in the diary.
Which are you most looking forward to: returning to Narnia, catching up with Girls, or trying The Land?
