What the Trailer Sets Up

Black Bear’s synopsis: on the outskirts of a village by the sea lives a fisherwoman, smelly, single and perpetually ridiculed. One day she commissions herself a husband made from wicker, and when he proves more spectacular than she ever imagined, his soulful spirit and unique prowess awaken something in her. In an otherwise conservative town, the unconventional romance sets off a wave of jealousy, fascination and outrage that threatens the very fabric of village life. The studio calls it “an audacious comedic fable about sex, marriage, and the absurdities of social convention”.

Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson wrote and directed the film, adapting Ursula Wills-Jones’s short story “The Wicker Husband”. Elizabeth Debicki, Marli Siu, Nabhaan Rizwan and Richard E. Grant fill out the village. Behind the camera are cinematographer Lol Crawley (The Brutalist), production designer Renátó Cseh (Poor Things) and composer Anna Meredith, with Wētā Workshop working on the wicker husband himself. Colman also produces through her company South of the River. The BBFC has passed it at 15 for strong sex and language, so this is not one for the kids.
