The News That Matters

American Horror Story is renewed for a 14th season ahead of its reunion finale

  • New development: FX renewed the anthology on Tuesday 20 October, Variety reported
  • Season 13: The current run, simply titled 13, reunites Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates and Emma Roberts, and ends on Thursday 29 October in the US
  • The numbers: Season 13 drew 4 million views in its first four days, the best streaming start in the show’s history
  • UK availability: American Horror Story: 13 streams on Disney+ in the UK, with new episodes on Fridays. Season 14 has no date yet

Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s horror anthology took a three-year break after 2023’s Delicate, and the gamble on a reunion season has paid off. Season 13 follows Joey Pollari as a hospice worker with a fear of the number 13 who finds himself caring for characters from earlier seasons, which is how so many old favourites ended up back on screen.

FX calls American Horror Story its longest-running hour-long series, with more than 2 billion hours watched since 2011. Nothing is known yet about the theme or cast of season 14. Two more episodes arrive on Disney+ in the UK this Friday, and our What to Watch page has more ideas for a scary night in.

Mena Suvari and David Arquette start shooting the empty-nest horror Homesick

  • New development: Filming begins today, Wednesday 21 October, in Winnipeg, Deadline and Bloody Disgusting reported
  • The story: A doctor (Suvari) and her husband (Arquette) settle into life alone after their daughter leaves for college, until a mysterious young woman (Belle Shouse) arrives and they no longer feel safe in their own home
  • Behind it: Directed by Todd Slavkin, who wrote it with his long-time partner Darren Swimmer; the pair worked on Smallville and Shadowhunters
  • UK availability: No release date or UK distributor yet. UK date not yet confirmed

Suvari’s character, Dr Abby Morrison, is hiding a secret she has never told her husband, and the stranger at the door seems to know it. Alberto Rosende, from Chicago Fire, completes the main cast, and Shouse was last seen in Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

It is a busy autumn for both leads. Suvari is one of the returning faces in American Horror Story: 13, and Arquette is also in the Screamfest thriller The Night Driver, which Cineverse has just picked up.

Keanu Reeves in talks to join James Wan’s The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil

  • New development: Reeves is negotiating to star in Paramount’s English-language version of the 2019 Korean thriller, The Hollywood Reporter reported on Tuesday 20 October
  • Cast: Don Lee (Ma Dong-seok) reprises his role as the crime boss from the original
  • Behind it: Wan directs and produces through Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, his first film as director since Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom; Eric Pearson wrote the latest script, and Sylvester Stallone is among the producers
  • UK availability: In development, with no release date. UK date not yet confirmed

The original premiered as a midnight screening at Cannes in 2019. It follows a police officer and a gang boss who reluctantly join forces to hunt a serial killer, each for his own reasons, with plenty of double-crosses along the way. It is a fine fit for Wan, whose horror work on Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring is all about the cat-and-mouse.

Reeves has not been formally cast yet. He is also voicing Shadow in Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 4, due in March 2027.

The Prestige returns for its 20th anniversary, in IMAX and 70mm for the first time

  • New development: Disney announced the re-release on Tuesday 20 October, 20 years to the day after the film opened in the US, and released a new teaser
  • Formats: IMAX and 70mm prints for the first time, plus 35mm and digital
  • The film: Christopher Nolan’s tale of rival Victorian magicians, starring Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine and Scarlett Johansson, with David Bowie as Nikola Tesla
  • UK availability: Back in US cinemas on Friday 29 January 2027. UK date not yet confirmed

Nolan said he was “very excited” to bring the film back to the big screen, “and particularly thrilled to offer audiences the chance to see it on 70mm film, and on IMAX for the first time.” Wally Pfister shot it on 35mm, and the new 70mm prints are blow-ups of that original photography.

Based on Christopher Priest’s novel, The Prestige slips into science fiction in its final act, thanks to Tesla’s mysterious machine. It earned Oscar nominations for its cinematography and art direction. Keep an eye on our UK Release Calendar for the British date.

Denzel Washington and Christopher McQuarrie team up on a thriller for October 2027

  • New development: United Artists and Amazon MGM Studios have greenlit the untitled film, Deadline reported on Tuesday 20 October
  • The story: A former police detective serving a life sentence is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and granted compassionate release, only for his past to catch up with him as he tries to make amends with his estranged daughter
  • Behind it: McQuarrie directs from a script by Scott Barkan and Gregg Zehentner; The Hollywood Reporter says filming starts in New Jersey in November
  • UK availability: Due in US cinemas on Friday 1 October 2027. UK date not yet confirmed

After a decade making Mission: Impossible films with Tom Cruise, McQuarrie is going back to the crime genre he made his name in with The Usual Suspects and Jack Reacher. The project moved to the top of Washington’s list after his Netflix epic Hannibal, with Antoine Fuqua, was paused over its budget.

The producers are now looking for an actor to play the detective’s daughter. Washington also stars opposite Robert Pattinson and Daisy Edgar-Jones in Netflix’s The Take, due in 2027.

First look at Unforgotten series 7, as Sophie Rundle and Julian Rhind-Tutt join the cold-case drama

  • New development: ITV released the first image and full cast this week as filming continues
  • The case: Human remains, thought to be a child’s, are found in a crawl space in Ladbroke Grove, and a DNA match links them to a case the police thought was closed
  • Cast: Sanjeev Bhaskar and Sinéad Keenan return as DI Sunny Khan and DCI Jess James, joined by Sophie Rundle, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Kirsty J Curtis, Natalie Simpson, Jo Hartley and Paul Kaye
  • UK availability: Returns to ITV1 and ITVX in 2027. Earlier series stream on ITVX

Chris Lang’s drama has become one of ITV’s most reliable hits, with 28 million viewers and 121 million streams across six series. This time the case takes the team from London to Great Yarmouth, Coventry, Halifax and Reading Prison, and becomes personal when Sunny and Jess have to reopen an inquiry they thought was finished.

Andy Wilson, who has directed every series so far, is back behind the camera. Rundle plays a troubled social worker, Curtis a respected prison inmate, Rhind-Tutt a struggling addict and Simpson a dogged journalist, and as usual, any of them could be hiding something.

Netflix’s profits rise but its shares slip, while the Narnia trailer passes 481 million views

  • New development: Netflix reported its July to September results on Tuesday 20 October
  • The figures: Revenue of $12.87bn, up almost 12% on a year ago, and profit of $3.66bn; ad revenue for 2026 is now expected to be about $2.7bn, down from $3bn
  • Narnia update: Deadline reports that the trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew was watched more than 481 million times in its first seven days
  • UK availability: Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is in UK cinemas from Thursday 11 February 2027 and on Netflix from 7 April

The results come at the end of a turbulent week for the streamer, which cut about 1,000 jobs and named Peter Rice as its new content chief. Netflix admitted there was “some investor concern” about how much time people spend watching, and its shares fell about 6% in after-hours trading as it trimmed its full-year forecast.

Narnia is a rare good-news story for the company. The trailer, which we covered when it arrived last week, has been seen more often in its first week than the one for Barbie, according to WaveMetrix figures reported by Deadline.

Golden Globes say Michael must compete as a drama, not a musical

  • New development: The Globes rejected Lionsgate’s request to enter the biopic in the comedy or musical categories, Gold Derby and Variety reported on Tuesday 20 October
  • Why: The Globes’ rules say songs must help to move the plot along, and the organisers judged the film’s musical numbers to be recreations of Michael Jackson’s performances
  • What happens next: Lionsgate can appeal before the 31 October deadline, but Variety’s sources say it is unlikely to. Nominations are announced on Monday 7 December
  • UK availability: Michael is available to buy or rent digitally in the UK

The ruling puts Jaafar Jackson into a crowded best actor in a drama race. The film became the first biopic to pass $1bn at the worldwide box office, and it is Lionsgate’s biggest release ever. Supporting stars Colman Domingo and Nia Long are not affected, because the supporting categories are not split by genre.

Recent music biopics, including Bohemian Rhapsody, Elvis and A Complete Unknown, have all competed as dramas.
