The Mongoose (2026) Super Review: Liam Neeson Hits the Road in an Old-School Chase Thriller

A Mustang screams down the highway at 130 miles an hour, a convoy of police cars in its wake and a helicopter overhead, while millions of viewers watch it all live. At the wheel is Liam Neeson, and in The Mongoose he is not hunting anyone. This time he is the one being hunted.

Directed by former stuntman Mark Vanselow, this is a lean, old-fashioned chase movie that opened in American cinemas on 30 October. There is no UK release date yet.

Viewer Match

  • Best for: Fans of Neeson’s action era and anyone who misses practical car chases over digital spectacle.
  • Maybe skip if: You want something fresh. The story is about as familiar as fugitive thrillers get.
  • Mood and pace: Quick, straightforward and noisy, with a few surprisingly tender moments.
  • Cinema or streaming? A fun Friday-night cinema trip, but it will be just as at home on a sofa.
  • Spoiler level: Spoiler-free: we only describe the set-up.

A Hero on the Run

Neeson plays Ryan “Fang” Flanagan, a highly decorated combat veteran who is accused of a murder he did not commit. With nothing left to lose, he runs, and leads the police on a televised chase across the country, helped by old army friends and a public that increasingly decides it is on his side.

That last idea is the film’s most interesting one. As the pursuit becomes a live television event, the fugitive becomes a folk hero before anyone knows the full truth. The film touches on how quickly a crowd picks a side, without ever slowing down to dwell on it.

A Tired, Likeable Lead

Neeson is a natural fit. Flanagan is not an unstoppable action machine but a worn-out soldier making fast decisions under pressure, and Neeson’s weary gravity sells it. Marisa Tomei brings warmth as his former wife, the reminder of the ordinary life he is trying to get back to, and Ving Rhames is a solid presence as a loyal old comrade. Michael Chiklis wisely plays the officer leading the pursuit as a man doing his job rather than a pantomime villain.

Stunts You Can Feel

Vanselow’s background in stunt work is the film’s biggest asset. The cars feel heavy and dangerous, the crashes have impact, and the action is filmed clearly, without frantic cutting. Shot largely in Victoria, Australia, standing in for the United States, the chase has a decent sense of scale, and a helicopter sequence is a highlight. The 96-minute running time keeps everything moving.

The screenplay, though, is a checklist of genre staples: the wrongly accused hero, the loyal friends, the worried ex-wife, the determined lawman. It leans on cliché and occasionally panders when it tries to honour the experience of veterans. It does not pretend to be anything more than it is, which helps, but nothing here will linger once the credits roll.
