Trailer Drop · 20 October 2026
Lionsgate has released the official trailer for Above the Below, a British survival thriller that starts with a disaster in space and ends somewhere even more hostile: the bottom of the ocean. Idris Elba co-directs the film with Martin Owen and stars alongside Caitlin FitzGerald and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. Lionsgate opens it in US cinemas on Friday 4 December 2026; a UK release date has not yet been confirmed.
What the Trailer Sets Up
Lionsgate’s synopsis: after three astronauts survive a disaster in space, their unscheduled crash-landing leaves them trapped in the crushing depths of the ocean, with no contact with mission control and their oxygen running out fast. In a race against time where every breath could be their last, the crew faces impossible choices, mounting odds and new dangers. The trailer turns the capsule that brought them home into a sinking trap, so surviving re-entry is only the start of their problems.
This is Elba’s first feature as a director since his 2018 crime drama Yardie. Owen developed the story, and Matt Mitchell, Elizabeth Morris and Vicki Sargent wrote the screenplay. Gina Carter and Matt Williams produce for Future Artists Entertainment. The film was shot in London, using the underwater stage at Pinewood Studios, between November 2023 and February 2024.
