Trailer Drop · 20 October 2026

GKIDS has released a new official trailer for Look Back, Palme d’Or winner Hirokazu Koreeda’s live-action film of the celebrated one-shot manga by Chainsaw Man creator Tatsuki Fujimoto. It opens in select North American cinemas on 30 December, then nationwide on 15 January 2027. GKIDS also holds the UK and Ireland rights, but a UK release date has not yet been confirmed; the film screened at the BFI London Film Festival this month.

What the Trailer Shows

GKIDS’ synopsis: confident grade-schooler Fujino draws comics for her school newspaper and earns her classmates’ admiration. When her work is surpassed by her reclusive peer Kyomoto, she becomes obsessed with improving, then burns out and gives up drawing altogether. But when Fujino finally meets Kyomoto, she discovers Kyomoto has been her devoted fan all along. Bound by their shared passion, they spend irreplaceable years drawing manga together, until a fateful event changes their lives forever. GKIDS calls the film a love letter to the artistic process, “hand-written in ink on paper”.

Natsuki Deguchi plays Fujino and Aju Makita plays Kyomoto, with Fūri Nanase and Rokka Okada as their younger selves. Masaki Suda appears as a Weekly Shōnen Jump editor, alongside Kankurō Kudō and Kayo Noro. Koreeda wrote, directed and edited the film, which was shot in Nikaho City in Akita, northern Japan, with music by Yūta Bandō. It opened in Japan in September after premiering at Venice, and follows the 2024 anime version of the same story.
