On an October morning in 1985, Alex Odeh unlocked the door of his office in Santa Ana, California, and triggered a bomb. He was a teacher, a community leader and the West Coast regional director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. Four decades later, nobody has ever been charged with his murder.
Who Killed Alex Odeh? asks the question in its title, but the most unsettling thing about this documentary is how much of the answer has been sitting in plain sight all along.

Its biggest twist is that there is no twist at all, and that is exactly what makes it so disturbing.

Viewer Match
- Best for: Viewers who like investigative journalism, political history and cold cases that ask uncomfortable questions.
- Maybe skip if: You want a stylish true-crime puzzle with shocking reveals, or a full portrait of Odeh’s life.
- Mood and pace: Steady, sober and quietly angry, with a tense real-time investigation in its second half.
- Cinema or streaming? Either works. It is a clear, informative film that will play well at home, but the cinema run supports an independent release.
- Spoiler level: Spoiler-free. The case details we mention are long on the public record.
A Murder Everyone Remembers
Jason Osder, who made the acclaimed archive documentary Let the Fire Burn, and first-time director William Lafi Youmans build the first half from a wealth of archive footage: news reports, press conferences and interviews with Odeh himself. The picture that emerges is of a man who believed in building bridges, and whose killing came days after a television interview about the hijacking of the cruise ship Achille Lauro.
Odeh’s widow, Norma, and his daughter, Helena, are the film’s emotional anchor. For decades they have been told by investigators that the case is a priority and has never been closed. Norma has kept everything, from photographs to keepsakes, and her quiet patience is almost harder to watch than anger would be.
Following the Leads
The film then changes gear. The investigation into the killing focused on members of the Jewish Defense League, the extremist group founded by Rabbi Meir Kahane, and the film traces how the trail went cold. When Israeli journalist David Sheen, who reports on the far right, joins the search, it becomes something close to a detective thriller, as he chases leads, finds witnesses and tries to confront people face to face.
What is shocking is how easy much of this turns out to be. Information that officials treated as out of reach is found with a few searches and a phone call. The film lets that sink in rather than spelling it out, and the effect is chilling: if this was so simple, why did nothing happen?
Plain, Perhaps Too Plain
The directors favour information over style. The structure is straightforward, the talking-head interviews rarely go beyond the surface of the family’s grief, and the spooky music over archive footage of extremists can feel heavy-handed. The film also leaves Odeh himself a little out of focus; we learn more about how he died than about who he was, which makes it harder to feel the full weight of the loss.
It also stops short of the biggest questions it raises, about the politics that may have shaped how the case was handled. Some viewers will wish it had gone further. Others will feel that the lack of resolution is the point: this is a story without catharsis, because there has never been any justice to find.
Why It Matters
Even with its limits, Who Killed Alex Odeh? is a valuable, timely piece of journalism, and it rightly won a special jury award for journalistic excellence at Sundance. Spoiler-Free Verdict
