Years after her Hollywood breakthrough, a talented actress whose career has stalled decides to fight for her second act. It is a familiar showbiz story, and in Chris Rock’s hands it is sometimes very funny and sometimes oddly flat.
Misty Green opened in the US in October and reaches selected UK cinemas this Friday through A24.

Rosalind Eleazar is so good that you wish the film around her were sharper.

A Second Act
Rock is clearly interested in what the industry does to talented people once the first flush of success fades. There are sharp observations about auditions, agents and image.
When it works, the film has the bite of his best stand-up.
Eleazar’s Film
Rosalind Eleazar is the reason to see it. She is funny, raw and magnetic, and she holds the screen against starry support from Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya and Anna Kendrick.
It is a performance that deserves to open doors.
Uneven
The film around her is less assured. The tone shifts awkwardly between satire and drama, some scenes drift, and the supporting stars feel underused.
Critics have been mixed, and the reasons are easy to see.
