  • New development: Variety reported on 28 September that Watts is attached to direct a film in development.
  • Writer: Simon Kinberg, according to Variety.
  • Studio status: Lucasfilm has not formally announced the project, cast or release date.

Variety reports that Jon Watts is attached to direct a new Star Wars film in development, with Simon Kinberg writing. Watts directed the three Tom Holland-led Spider-Man films and co-created the Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew with Christopher Ford. His return to the galaxy would therefore follow work he has already done on a Star Wars story.

Some reports call the developing project Episode X and connect it to a further Skywalker trilogy. Lucasfilm has not confirmed that title, the cast, a production start or a release date. The meaningful news this week is the reported creative attachment; the eventual film may still change as development continues.

Watts’ previous Star Wars work makes this an intriguing choice. Skeleton Crew followed younger characters through an adventure in the New Republic era. What story a film under his direction would tell remains an open question.

  • New development: Lucasfilm’s vehicle guide and final Under the Hood instalment, published 29 September.
  • Planned release: 6 October 2026.
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Lucasfilm’s new guide describes four vehicle classes in Star Wars: Galactic Racer: podracers, skim speeders, speeder bikes and landspeeders. It sets out how each is meant to handle as the 6 October launch approaches.

Podracers pair speed with airbraking, which costs momentum in tight corners. Skim speeders favour sharp manoeuvres but accelerate slowly. Speeder bikes can use a temporary Kinetic Burst, trading speed for control, while landspeeders offer a sturdier, more forgiving drive.

Those distinctions suggest a real choice of racing style rather than four versions of the same machine. How well that choice works over a full race will become clearer when players can take to the track.

Movieversalfilm Takeaway

The Watts report is the week’s biggest film development, with the important caveat that Lucasfilm has yet to announce the project. On the games side, Galactic Racer now offers a clearer picture of how its vehicles differ ahead of its planned launch. Both stories point to fresh Star Wars adventures, at very different stages.

Would you rather see Watts return to Star Wars on the big screen or try Galactic Racer’s podracing first?
