Old money and new money are at war again, and this time the White House is watching. HBO Max has released a “Weeks Ahead” trailer for season 4 of The Gilded Age, Julian Fellowes’ 1880s New York drama, on the day the new season reaches UK screens. It premieres on Sky Atlantic and NOW tonight, Monday 2 November, at 9pm.
A New Portrait of Power in 1880s New York
Released the morning after the US premiere, the two-minute trailer looks beyond the opening episode at the season to come, under the tagline “The future of influence”. HBO’s official logline sets out the stakes: Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) changed Society at a cost, and now her family must reckon with the consequences as Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) seizes an opportunity to regain her position. Meanwhile, Marian (Louisa Jacobson) forges a new path for herself, and Peggy (Denée Benton) works to be accepted by her future in-laws. “In this new era, you must be careful what you wish for.”
Cynthia Nixon, Morgan Spector, Harry Richardson, Taissa Farmiga, Blake Ritson and Audra McDonald are among the returning cast. Kelley Curran and Jordan Donica are now series regulars, and the newcomers include Jim Gaffigan as President Grover Cleveland, who comes to New York to court the elite, Dallas Roberts as Treasury Secretary Daniel Manning, Elizabeth Marvel as settlement-house nurse Virginia Saville and Andrew Burnap as Porter, a young Ivy League investor.
The eight-episode season began in the US on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday 1 November. In the UK, episode one, “Ring the Bells”, airs tonight at 9pm on Sky Atlantic, with new episodes every Monday through to the finale on 21 December. Each episode is also on NOW, and on HBO Max in the UK from 2am on Monday mornings.
