Carrie Coon walks away from her whole life in the first trailer for The Liberation, Guy Nattiv’s cult drama co-starring Lily James, Bella Ramsey, Odessa Young and Tracy Letts. Bleecker Street released it on Monday night ahead of a short awards-qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles. A UK release date has not been confirmed yet.

A Mother Under a Spell
Coon plays Rita, a woman in midlife haunted by the weight of her past. She meets Ricki (James), a magnetic young spiritual leader, and leaves her family to follow her to an all-female commune. When her daughters Ella (Ramsey) and Jo (Young) turn up unexpectedly and are drawn into the group’s seductive world, Rita has to choose between the family she left behind and the life she believes can save her.
Set in the early 1980s and inspired by real events, the film makes Rita a Holocaust survivor still carrying her trauma, with Letts as the husband she abandons. Coon, fresh from The Gilded Age, has drawn awards talk for the role since the film’s world premiere at Telluride.
Nattiv, who directed Golda, wrote the script as well as directing. Bleecker Street opens the film in select US cinemas on 8 January 2027, going nationwide on 15 January, after a brief qualifying run this month. For more of what is heading to screens, see What Is Coming Next: November 2026.
