The News That Matters

Update: Mirfield lights candles and lowers its flag for Sir Patrick Stewart

  • What’s new: St Mary’s church in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, opened its doors on Friday so people could light a candle for Sir Patrick, who died on Wednesday at his Los Angeles home aged 86, the Mirfield Mail reported. A display beside the altar showed his photograph and a picture of him outside the terraced house on Camm Lane where he was born
  • The town’s tribute: Mirfield Town Council lowered the Union Flag to half-mast outside Mirfield Library, calling him “a Mirfield icon” and one of the town’s original Mirfield Ambassadors. It also shared a video of him remembering what the library meant to him as a boy
  • On the day of the funeral: Kirklees Council, which made him an Honorary Freeman of the Borough in 2024, will lower its flags to half-mast on the day of his funeral. No date has been announced. Spen Valley MP Kim Leadbeater called him “Mirfield’s finest”
  • Across the Atlantic: Saturday Night Live ended last night’s Halloween show with an archive clip from the 1994 episode he hosted, introducing musical guest Salt-N-Pepa, Deadline reported. In Star Trek Online, players have been holding torchlit vigils and flying Galaxy-class ships in formation in his memory
  • UK availability: Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard stream on Paramount+ in the UK. Funeral date not yet announced

It is fitting that the flag flies outside the library: Stewart credited that library, and a Mirfield teacher who put Shakespeare in his hands, with setting him on the road to the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Enterprise. Walton Goggins wraps Fallout season three

  • What happened: Walton Goggins has finished filming season three of Prime Video’s Fallout, posting a video of himself driving through the desert. “Just took it off for the last time.. Season 3,” he wrote. “I wish this road or this song would never end. Gonna miss you California… til the next time,” Deadline reported
  • What it means: Some fans read “the last time” as a hint about the Ghoul’s fate, but he is most likely talking about his prosthetics for this season. The show is still filming in California and has not been renewed or cancelled beyond season three
  • Who’s in it: Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Kyle MacLachlan, Moisés Arias and Frances Turner return, joined by Aaron Paul, Manny Jacinto, Emily Mortimer and Thomasin McKenzie
  • What’s next for Goggins: He joins Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler in Universal’s Miami Vice ’85
  • UK availability: Seasons one and two stream on Prime Video in the UK; season three UK date not yet confirmed

Goggins’ Ghoul has been the dark heart of one of the best video game adaptations yet, so the end of his shoot is a real milestone. Filming is still going, and Prime Video has not yet given a release window.

Robert Pattinson has seen Dune: Part Three and calls it “unbelievable”

  • What he said: “It’s unbelievable. Can’t believe I got a part in it,” Pattinson told BAFTA, adding that “people are gonna be watching that trilogy for years and years and years”, Digital Spy reported
  • His role: He plays Scytale, the Tleilaxu Face Dancer who plots to bring down Emperor Paul Atreides. He said that when Denis Villeneuve called him, he had to look the character up, then said yes “immediately”: “that’s literally my ideal part”
  • The story: Set almost two decades after Paul seized power, the film adapts Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya returning
  • UK availability: In UK cinemas from 18 December 2026

Actors always praise their own films, but Pattinson is a famously choosy performer and his excitement matches the buzz around Villeneuve’s finale. Catch up with the final trailer before December.

REANIMAL leads the nominations for London’s Horror Game Awards

  • What happened: Tarsier Studios’ REANIMAL leads this year’s Horror Game Awards with 10 nominations, ahead of Resident Evil Requiem with nine, Bloody Disgusting reported. Silent Hill Townfall, Hellraiser: Revival and Silver Pines have eight each
  • The awards: More than 100 games compete across 21 categories. Co-creators Phil Dickens and Will Penkeyman host, with co-producer Ash Millman
  • How to vote: The public chooses the Players’ Choice and Horror Content Creator of the Year awards, with voting open until 11 November; juries decide the rest
  • UK availability: The live ceremony is on Friday 20 November at 26 Leake Street, Waterloo, London

Horror games now feed straight into film and television, from Resident Evil to Silent Hill, so a London-based awards night for the genre is worth keeping an eye on.

Update: You Can See Everything edges Clayface for No 1 on a quiet Halloween weekend

  • What’s new: A24’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything, from Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, reports $10.6 million in the US and Canada in its third weekend, just ahead of Warner Bros’ Clayface on $10.4 million, according to studio estimates reported by Deadline and Variety. Final figures come on Monday
  • The race: Clayface won Halloween itself with $4.2 million on Saturday, but the documentary was expected to win Sunday. Clayface now has $44.1 million in North America and about $83 million worldwide, The Industry reported. Laika’s Wildwood was third with $7.5 million
  • Horror’s big hitter: Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil fell just 13% in its seventh weekend and has passed $400 million worldwide, the biggest total in the series before inflation, according to The Industry
  • The wider picture: All films took about $62 million, one of the slowest weekends of the year, with Halloween falling on a Saturday and no big new releases
  • UK availability: Clayface (rated 18) and Wildwood are in UK cinemas now. You Can See Everything has not opened outside North America yet; UK date not yet confirmed

A documentary beating a superhero film in its third week is remarkable. Clayface is holding up reasonably on a $40 million budget, up from the $60 million worldwide we reported in our superhero round-up. Our last weekend box office report has the full chart from the previous weekend.

Michael Mann is recovering after a gun range accident, with Heat 2 still on for January

  • What happened: The director of Heat and Collateral suffered a superficial leg injury on Saturday when a holstered weapon accidentally went off at a Los Angeles gun range, Deadline and the Los Angeles Times reported. He was treated in hospital and released
  • What it means: His representative said the accident will not affect plans to start filming Heat 2, his sequel to the 1995 crime classic, in January
  • UK availability: No release date yet for Heat 2; UK date not yet confirmed

Good news that it was minor. Mann has spent years turning his Heat 2 novel into a film, and a January start would finally get it in front of the cameras.
