The News That Matters
Richard Madden and Jed Mercurio reunite as Netflix dates Trinity for 1 December
- What happened: Netflix has set Tuesday 1 December for Trinity, the new political thriller written by Bodyguard creator Jed Mercurio, and released the first trailer and first-look images, Netflix and Deadline confirmed on Wednesday
- The story: Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays Commander Katherine Decker, second-in-command of the nuclear submarine USS Kansas. She grows close to the charismatic US Secretary of Defense, Webb Preston (Richard Madden), then comes to suspect he is at the heart of a conspiracy around a top-secret programme code-named Trinity. Mercurio says she fears he is “either the saviour of world peace or its greatest threat”
- Who’s in it: Marcia Gay Harden, JD Pardo, Bruce Greenwood, Robert Wisdom, Kirk Acevedo, Ben Cotton, James Remar, Jason Ralph and Mark O’Brien. Mercurio is showrunner for Hat Trick Mercurio, and Michael Cuesta directed the first two episodes
- UK availability: All seven episodes on Netflix in the UK from Tuesday 1 December
Mercurio says he took his cue from the Pentagon thriller No Way Out, and pairing him with Madden again after Bodyguard is the easiest sell on Netflix’s December slate. His company is also one of the reported bidders to make the next era of Doctor Who, as we covered in Who Will Make the Next Doctor Who? The Three Companies in the Running.
Update: Callum Turner steps down from his production company as Bond odds swing his way

- What is new: Callum Turner has resigned as a director of Twentytwo Films Ltd, the production company he set up in August 2025 with his wife, Dua Lipa, The Guardian reported on Wednesday. The paper says some read the move as a sign his priorities may lie elsewhere; Turner has not commented, and nothing links it to Bond officially
- The betting: These are bookmakers’ odds, not news of a decision. William Hill has cut Turner from 3/1 to 8/13 to be the next 007, with Jack Lowden at 2/1 and Josh O’Connor at 9/2, The Guardian reported
- What is confirmed: Nothing on casting. Amazon MGM Studios has not named an actor. Denis Villeneuve directs from Steven Knight’s script, with Amy Pascal and David Heyman producing, and Pascal has said an announcement by the end of the year is “a good bet”
- UK availability: No title or release date confirmed; The Guardian says the film is expected in 2028. UK date not yet confirmed
Turner, Lowden and O’Connor are reported to have taken final screen tests, and all three have now been asked about it in public. For O’Connor’s reaction and Pierce Brosnan’s backing of Turner, read Josh O’Connor Calls the James Bond Talk a ‘Bizarre Pinch Me Moment’. Until Amazon MGM speaks, it is all still reports.

- What happened: Daisy Ridley, Sosie Bacon (Smile) and Simon Rex (Red Rocket) will star in Get Rid of It, which is being launched to buyers at the American Film Market and shoots at the start of 2027, Variety reported
- The story: Harper (Ridley) finds she is pregnant after a one-night stand with a mysterious drifter, Miller (Rex), and sets off on a cross-country road trip with her sister Jessie (Bacon). The sisters end up fighting for survival as they realise the thing growing inside Harper may not be human
- Who’s making it: Ry Russo-Young (Before I Fall, Shrinking) directs from a script by Gemma Holdway. David Lancaster, producer of Whiplash, Nightcrawler and Drive, produces
- UK availability: Filming from early 2027; UK date not yet confirmed
Ridley keeps choosing interesting genre work since Rey, from zombie thriller We Bury the Dead to Ti West’s Ebenezer. She is also leading a Paramount+ series, as we reported in Daisy Ridley Leads Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea — plus More.
Update: Art Malik, Fred Loxley and Mirren Mack join Alfonso Cuarón’s horror series Ascension
- What is new: Art Malik (The Little Mermaid), Fred Loxley (Number 10) and Mirren Mack (28 Years Later: The Bone Temple) have joined Apple TV’s Ascension as series regulars, Deadline reported on Wednesday
- Already cast: Caitríona Balfe leads and executive produces, with Bill Nighy, Amanda Plummer, Christopher Chung and T’Nia Miller
- The story: Inspired by Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days, it follows Rose (Balfe), a documentary filmmaker making a film about a mysterious 20th-century cult, the Church of Ascension, who finds refuge in its teachings until she uncovers something far more sinister. Alfonso and Carlos Cuarón are among the writers and executive producers
- UK availability: Apple TV; UK date not yet confirmed
A cast this deep suggests Apple is treating Cuarón’s first horror as a prestige event. The last round of casting is in Jennifer Lawrence Confirms Katniss Returns in Sunrise on the Reaping.
Get Out producers and a Hill House writer team up on ghost series The Invited

- What happened: Impossible Dream Entertainment, the company behind Get Out, is developing The Invited with British producer Wall to Wall (Waterloo Road), a supernatural mystery series drawn from the ghost novels of Wendy Webb, Deadline reported
- The story: Rather than adapt a single book, it will weave Webb’s novels into one haunted world set in the lakeside town of Wharton. Season one adapts The End of Temperance Dare, in which a former crime reporter becomes director of an artists’ retreat in an old tuberculosis sanatorium
- Who’s writing: Helen Black (Life and Death in the Warehouse, Time) is adapting with Jeff Howard, Mike Flanagan’s regular collaborator on The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass and Gerald’s Game
- UK availability: In development, with no broadcaster or streamer announced; UK date not yet confirmed
A British writer and a Flanagan veteran on a shared haunted universe is a promising mix. For a ghost story you can watch this month, see Danny Robins’ The Witch Farm in John Leeson, the Voice of Doctor Who’s K9, Dies Aged 83.
Lilly Wachowski backs Terrifier star Jenna Kanell’s sci-fi debut De Novo
- What happened: Lilly Wachowski’s company Anarchists United has come on board De Novo as executive producer, alongside Coherence director James Ward Byrkit, Deadline reported. The film is in post-production and is being sold at the American Film Market by Narrative Global Sales
- The story: Written and directed by Jenna Kanell, who played Tara in Terrifier, it follows Jonah, a reclusive scientist studying fungi who, after a cosmic event, discovers she is trapped in a simulation powered by the very system she helped create
- Who’s in it: Kanell stars with Justin Chien (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Alexis Louder (Copshop) and Frank Crim (Dexter)
- UK availability: In post-production; UK date not yet confirmed
A simulation thriller with a Wachowski seal of approval will turn heads, and Coherence remains one of the cleverest low-budget sci-fi films of recent years.
Richard Armitage starts shooting Tuscan horror Cinghiale

- What happened: Cinghiale, starring Richard Armitage (The Hobbit), Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland) and Quelin Sepulveda (Havoc), has started filming in the medieval town of Barga in Tuscany, Deadline reported
- The story: Two friends travel to a remote Italian village to settle a family estate, and their trip spirals into a deadly game of deception at the hands of a charming hunter (Armitage) with a terrifying secret. The title means wild boar, which roam the forests around Barga
- Who’s making it: It is the second feature from Jordan Tragash, who is shooting during the region’s season of heavy autumn mists
- UK availability: Filming now; UK date not yet confirmed
Armitage has been one of British television’s best villains, so casting him as the charming hunter makes sense.
Jason Statham and Guy Ritchie reunite for Netflix’s London revenge thriller Dogfight
- What happened: Netflix has announced Dogfight, written, directed and produced by Guy Ritchie and starring Jason Statham, their seventh film together and their first Netflix original, Netflix and Deadline confirmed
- The story: Netflix calls it a “stylish revenge actioner set in the London criminal underworld”, which puts the pair back on the turf of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch
- Who’s making it: Black Bear, Ritchie’s Toff Guy Films and Statham’s Punch Palace, with Statham also producing
- UK availability: Filming in the UK from early 2027; Netflix release date not yet confirmed
The pair have already finished Viva La Madness, so Dogfight keeps a famously productive partnership busy into 2027.
